The Good Doctor

A gentle smile through cracked lips

Grace seemingly from a time of old

White coat accessory to a heart of gold

Work worn hands dual to grip

Condolences are a potent medicine

Pious man to the confession

Kind eyes groove a deep impression

God gave you two ears to listen

Both microscopic and wide vision

Ears tuned to nuance

Grief and anger draw a careful response

Ignorance never met with derision

The art is long and life is fleeting

Syncopation in the heart’s beating

Today’s novelty is tomorrow’s history

Great humility in solving the body’s mysteries

It’s harder these days to make ends meet

Generations of patients to reminisce

Borne a heavy load like Sisyphus

Discs spurn with so many hours on the feet

Despite difficulty an optimism shines through

To meet each day with vigor brand new

In time this task will be my own

And I’ll think of the good doctor I had known
