Inner Monologue

by Paige Spata

Medium: Watercolor paint and ripped pages from a book

Artist’s Statement:

In this piece, I aimed to portray the ongoing battle of thoughts and emotions I experience as a person who struggles with mental illness. I positioned this woman so that she is looking up towards a brighter portion of the sky, maybe even towards the sun. The portions of her face that are feeling the warmth and opportunity of sunlight are home to lighter, brighter words. Some of my days are so full of love and life that the colorful words easily win. However, there are days when the sun doesn’t shine so bright and the darker, heavier words can still make themselves known.
