Gravid Moon

The gravid gibbous
moon
inexorably swollen
awkward, heavy
with offspring sired
by the great spirit
in the dark
of the new moon
her time parturient
symphysis softened,
cervix dilated, stoic
spasms quickened
to sotto voce cries
Tenderly, tenderly,
she suckles
the human spirit
